What non-academic data does the state of Arizona collect about Arizona pupils?
A.R.S. § 15-741 requires the State Board of Education to publish on its website a description of all non-test student data collected pursuant to an annually administered statewide assessment such as the AASA.
The non-test student data currently collected by the Arizona Department of Education on the AASA is as follows:
Student Last Name
Student First Name
Student Middle Name
Birthdate
SSID
Grade
Gender
Race/Ethnicity
Special Education Status
English Language Learner Status
Economic Disadvantaged Status
Migrant Status
The purpose for collecting these data elements are for either student identification purposes or for the analyses necessary to determine that the test items are fair with regard to student characteristics which are outside the student’s control (e.g., gender, race/ethnicity, etc.).
The Department’s test vendor is prohibited from sharing AASA non-test student data with any entity other than the Department of Education.
In addition to the non-test data listed above, the statewide assessments administered in high school, the ACT and ACT Aspire, include optional non-test questions that students may answer. ACT collects this data to provide educational or career opportunities to students, including for state and federal scholarships. Neither the Department of Education nor the State Board of Education collects this data. Students are not required to provide answers to these questions and students may refuse to allow ACT to share this data.
The additional and optional non-test information students may provide includes the student's address, phone number, high school information, high school academic information including college major and occupational choice, college plans, and extracurricular activities. If a student chooses to provide this information and if a student allows ACT to share it, each state and federal scholarship program and agency that receives the data must enter into confidentiality agreements with ACT prior to receiving the data.
