Mission

To develop successful citizens through robust public education.

General Information

The State Board of Education is created by the Arizona Constitution and charged with the responsibility of regulating the conduct of the public school system. The Board is composed of the following eleven members: the superintendent of public instruction, the president of a state university or state college, four lay members, a president or chancellor of a community college district, a person who is an owner or administrator of a charter school, a superintendent of a high school district, a classroom teacher and a county school superintendent.

In addition to its general regulatory responsibilities, Arizona law charges the Board with numerous other duties. The primary powers and duties of the Board are articulated in A.R.S. § 15-203.

WHAT NONACADEMIC DATA DOES THE STATE OF ARIZONA COLLECT ABOUT ARIZONA PUPILS?

House Bill 2088, Session Law 330 (Fifty-Second Legislature Second Regular Session), requires the State Board of Education to publish on its website a description of all non-test student data collected pursuant to an annually administered statewide assessment such as AzM2.

The non-test student data currently collected by the Arizona Department of Education on the AzM2 is as follows:

Student Last Name
Student First Name
Student Middle Name
Birthdate
SAIS ID
Grade
Gender
Race/Ethnicity
Special Education Status
English Language Learner Status
Economic Disadvantaged Status
Migrant Status

The purpose for collecting these data elements are for either student identification purposes or for the analyses necessary to determine that the test items are fair with regard to student characteristics which are outside the student’s control (e.g., gender, race/ethnicity, etc.).

The Department’s test vendor is prohibited from sharing AzM2 non-test student data with any entity other than the Department of Education.
